RE: Action against Israel

Dear The Honourable Stephen Smith MP

We write to you, as the foreign affairs representative of Australians, to take a proactive approach in relation to Israel’s inhumane stance against the people of Palestine.

As we have seen in the last week, Israeli combat commandos have taken an illegal and violent approach in restricting humanitarian workers reaching the destitute Gazans. This was not an isolated incident. Israel had repeatedly broken the laws of human rights as displayed in last year’s attack on the people of Gaza and the restriction of Palestinians to move in their home land.

The Australian government have condemned the atrocities of Israel and the assisted the Australian humanitarian workers through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. These actions are commendable and should be highlighted

Israel
would continue the atrocities if action is not taken. Therefore, on behalf of the FAMSY, a organisation with developing young Australian Muslims at its heart, and the Australians we serve, we call upon the Australian government, to:

  • Call upon the United Nations to conduct an investigation of the Flotilla incident
  • Repeat a request to Israel fully open its borders with Gaza to ensure the sustainability of life in Gaza,
  • Increase the humanitarian support for the Palestinian people,
  • Call upon Israel to genuinely implement its obligations towards the Palestinian people as defined under international law,
  • Call upon all parties to re-engage in dialogue with each other,
  • Actively involve itself with the international community to find avenues towards a peaceful and just resolution to the conflict, and
  • Approve the Palestinians right in choosing their own government in a free elections

Australians believe in fighting for a fair go. Thus, we urge the Government to take a proactive approach in giving the Gazans a fair go. We hope to receive a favourable outcome from this letter in the near future.

Yours faithfully

Umar Batchelor
